I have applied for and failed many job applications in the past, so I understand the disappointment you may feel. Please do not be disheartened.
Although I cannot make specific reference to your application, I hope you will read the general comments on all the applications I received, and hope they may improve your success with other applications.
The common reasons I had for non-selection included:
- Almost all applicants failed to do any research on our company and gain a more detailed understanding on what work we are involved with. Someone who has spent an hour or two searching the internet on … would gain a feel for whether the position was suited to their previous experience and future goals, and be able to communicate this to a prospective employer. Most applicants focused on themselves, and gave me little idea of how they saw themselves fitting into and developing a career in our particular niche. This was a major factor in screening out applicants, and one I recommend all job applicants spend a good deal of time of when applying for future positions with any organisation.
- Very few applicants gave me any indication they understood what … accreditation entails, or what techniques we use in analysing … samples.
- Education in fields, including current studies that were weakly related or in which the applicant was unable to explain the relevance or desire to work within our field.
- Under-developed written communication skills, which may have included spelling errors, incorrect word usage, poor formatting of documents, non-inclusion of covering letter, email addresses that are unprofessional or do not have your proper name etc.
- Potentially long commuting times to our … premises. Again, reference to how long it may take you to travel from your residence to a prospective employer shows you’ve done the math and fully considered the potential commitment, and likewise reference to previous commuting experience can demonstrate a willingness to cope with travel times. Whereis is a simple place to start in this respect.
I encourage you to select carefully when applying for future positions (quality over quantity), and take your time when researching an organisation. Many applications rushed in within a short time of the advert being posted; but quality businesses will slow down and read carefully (though quickly) through all applications received, as we wish to hire people who we will enjoy working with, and who we think will stay with us for some time.
